It may be hard to believe, but school is back in session! With that being said, school supplies have been on my mind during the last few weeks as I’ve been preparing my daughters for back-to-school. While shopping, I was reminded that not all children have the resources to purchase new school supplies.
We are joined today by Huntsville’s first lady, Eula Battle, to talk about the Free 2 Teach Program. It all started when Eula, a 31-year teaching veteran, was doing some charity work and noticed an enormous box of school supplies that were donated. This planted the seed in her head to start a nonprofit where she was able to help teachers and students alike. It started with a box in her garage, and is now a 10,000 sq. ft. warehouse.
Many people don’t realize this, but teachers spend a significant amount of money out of their own expenses for their classrooms. Contrary to popular belief, tax dollars don’t cover a lot of this, and many teachers are forced to spend between $500 and $1500 out of their own pocket on school supplies. We need to do more as a community to help these teachers, because they are preparing our children for the future. We wouldn’t ask a fireman to provide his own hose, would we?
At the Free 2 Teach warehouse, they have a large retail store where teachers can come in and get what they need. The supply depends on the demand, but also on the community to participate. When this happens, they are able to buy more supplies in bulk at a discount.
Some of the most needed supplies right now include markers, colored pencils, crayons, pencils, rulers, folders, composition notebooks, and copy paper.
If you’d like to donate to this worthwhile cause, there are a lot of ways to do that. You could make a check out to “Free 2 Teach” or you can visit their website at www.Free-2-Teach.org and there is a donate button right there. You can donate year-round too, as school supplies tend to get more and more expensive as we get towards the end of the year.
Caring about our community is deeply embedded in our values. That being said, we are hosting a supply drive for Free 2 Teach at both of our offices. We will be collecting supplies in both Madison and Huntsville from now until September 1st. Our offices are located at:
Huntsville: 900 Merchants Walk Suite A 35801
Madison: 12090 County Line Rd Suite M 35756
