Going Neutral on Painting When Selling Your Home

Hello, everyone. Thanks for visiting my real estate blog!

You may have recently seen the article “Does repainting your home in neutrals help it sell more quickly?” in the Huntsville Times. In the article, I am used as an expert to help answer that question for readers.

Because this is a popular question for so many of you, I wanted to go more in depth with you about why you should choose neutral colors when selling.

I told the journalist my general rule of thumb is, ‘when in doubt – go neutral.’ Of course, each individual’s home is different.

Sometimes a homeowner can have a beautiful room with a modern color palette and complimentary accent pieces that can really win a buyer over. More times that not, though, I have found this is not the case. Color is very taste specific and can turn a lot of potential buyers off.

Even though it sounds funny, we have had buyers walk away from homes because there was an Alabama Crimson Tide or Auburn Tigers themed room. Or what if you have a pretty pink bedroom that your daughter loved? Well, the next homeowner might not have children or maybe they have all boys. The pink bedroom is one more thing they will have to do to change it to their preference.

When you are selling your home, you want the potential buyers to make a connection with it. They want to be able to imagine their life and family in it. Having neutral colors allows the buyer to do that much easier.

If you want to sell your home quickly and for a great price, take down the accessories and paint neutral!
